When Is It Time For A Catalytic Converter Replacement?
Possible signs you might need a new catalytic converter on your vehicle:
- Loud exhaust noise (your cat has rusted/rotted and has a hole in it)
- Rattling noises (the substrate inside the catalytic converter has begun to break apart and move around)
- Engine codes such as P0420, P0421, P0430, and P0431 indicate a possible failed catalytic converter
- Loss of power (the substrate inside your catalytic converter has been plugged up and is no longer able to allow enough exhaust to freely flow through)
Many times, a catalytic converter failure is a symptom of an engine problem, ie, poor tuning, or misfiring spark plugs. In such cases, it is important to address the engine problem before replacing the failed catalytic converter in order to avoid recurring failure of the catalytic converter.
Once we determine that a replacement is in fact needed, we can then proceed to make the repair.
